We received the following message this evening, after crews responded to a reported dwelling fire in the 300 block of Washington Street….

Hello,
My name is Jimmy Burril and I have been a resident of Havre de grace for about twelve years. We love it here. My wife and I both work in town, my oldest child graduated from HDG High, and my youngest goes to HDG Middle School.
I am writing to comment on the Susquehanna Hose Co. for their call to action that took place on Tuesday, April 11th, 2017, about 5:45pm. The house across from us on the 300 block of Washington Street had put in a call for what she suspected was a fire in her home. I was outside drinking coffee on my porch. I watched as she walked outside with her phone in hand. At the same time as she was walking out, a fire truck pulled to the end of my block. Also at the same time, a SUV labeled ASST. CHIEF pulled in front of my house. He got out and flagged the truck. A fireman had already jumped off the back and hooked the hose to the hydrant on the far corner, and the truck began moving towards the house down our street. As this was happening, two other fire trucks pulled in to block off the road. Meanwhile, the truck pulled in front of the house, men and women of the SHCO leapt from the truck, gearing up as they moved. Hoses were hooked up, and a line of men and women went up the side steps to my neighbor’s home, hose and tools in hand.
All of this took place in less than two minutes. I know this as I was watching my phone as they pulled up, and noted how fast they were moving. UNDER 2 MINUTES!! It was impressive to say the least. They came in to do their job and were moving like a well-oiled machine.
My neighbor had a small issue, so there was no need for them to go any further than investigating the home. I see this as a lucky break for all, but I did want to take this time to commend the men and women of the HDG Fire Dept. for such an amazing and professional response. When it was over… coast was clear… they packed up their gear and left quickly, making sure everything went back on the truck in an orderly fashion.
It makes me feel safer for my family, friends and myself, knowing that this is who we call if such a terrible event should happen to us. It is a comfort to know that by the time I walk out of my front door from such a situation, I will more than likely be greeted by one of these brave men and women… lights flashing, ready to protect us and our home.
Our town is very fortunate to have these people working for us. As a citizen of Havre de Grace, I just wanted to share my thoughts with all concerned.
