Within the last few months, the Susquehanna Hose Company has taken several major steps towards cancer prevention, with the most recent being the issue of new GORE Particulate Hoods for all interior firefighters. After extensive research of the hoods on the market, Chief Scott Hurst along with Deputy Chief Steve Allers & Safety Officer Shawn Hurst decided to purchase the new hoods for our 98 interior firefighters.
The GORE® Particulate Hood provides excellent particulate-blocking throughout the entire hood — not just in selected areas. Its innovative design integrates a barrier that blocks more than 99.9 percent of particles between 0.1 and 1.0 microns in size. In addition, this hood exceeds current NFPA 1971 requirements for thermal protection.
The SHCo has also installed Plymovent Exhaust systems in all fire houses, distributed new APEXPro Medical gloves, installed two gear washers & dryers (with a new Circul-Air Dryer on order), instituted mandatory gear cleaning, issued a back up hood to all interior firefighters and placed wipes & gross decon units (reducer with 6ft garden hose & nozzle) on all apparatus for members to use after fire attack, with new Life Elements Action Wipes set to arrive soon. All of this is geared towards protecting our members & preventing cancer.
